Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh found himself in a direct confrontation with Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday after officers arrived at Prayagraj's Circuit House and attempted to interrupt his meeting with students on the issue of question paper leaks in competitive examinations.
What Happened
AAP MP Sanjay Singh was engaged in a discussion with student aspirants regarding recent paper leak scandals when UP Police officials entered the premises and sought to bring the gathering to a halt. The MP firmly refused to comply, openly challenging the officers' authority to interfere in what he described as a peaceful and private meeting.
"This is a gathering of students who have been wronged. No government or police force has the right to silence their voices," Singh reportedly told the officers on the spot.
After a tense standoff, the police eventually withdrew without taking any coercive action, allowing the meeting to proceed.
The Bigger Issue: Exam Scandals Rocking UP
The incident comes at a time of intense student frustration across Uttar Pradesh over a series of high-profile examination irregularities. The cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination left hundreds of thousands of medical aspirants in uncertainty, while alleged irregularities in the SSC GD Constable recruitment process further eroded student confidence in the examination system.
Protests have been growing across the state, with students demanding re-examinations, transparent investigations, and strict action against those responsible for the leaks.
AAP Accuses BJP Government of Suppression
Singh's visit to Prayagraj was part of AAP's broader campaign to highlight what the party calls a deliberate failure by the BJP-led state government to protect the integrity of public examinations.
The party has accused the Uttar Pradesh administration of not only mishandling the paper leak crises but also of deploying police to suppress legitimate conversations around the issue.
"Instead of catching the paper leak culprits, the government is sending police to stop opposition leaders from meeting students. This tells you everything about their priorities," Singh said.
Government Yet to Respond
Neither the Uttar Pradesh state government nor the local Prayagraj Police have issued an official statement regarding Monday's confrontation as of the time of publishing.
The incident is expected to further intensify political tensions in the state, with student organisations already signalling plans for larger demonstrations in the days ahead.
